The Genesee, Idaho, and Lewis-Clark State College communities are mourning the heartbreaking loss of Ray Stout, a beloved former Warrior basketball standout whose passing has left family, friends, former teammates, coaches, and supporters grieving. Remembered as an exceptional athlete, devoted family man, and compassionate friend, Ray’s legacy extends far beyond his accomplishments on the basketball court.
Ray proudly represented the Lewis-Clark State College Men’s Basketball program from 2007 to 2009 after an outstanding career at Walla Walla Community College. During his time with the Warriors, he earned the respect of teammates and coaches through his determination, enthusiasm, and relentless passion for the game. While his talent as a player was widely admired, those who knew him say his greatest accomplishments came through the way he treated others.

The Warrior Athletic Department paid tribute to Ray, describing him as a beloved member of the Warrior family whose kindness, generosity, and caring nature touched everyone he encountered. Coaches recalled that whenever someone needed help, Ray was always the first to step forward without hesitation. His positive attitude, selflessness, and infectious enthusiasm made him a treasured teammate and friend.
Former coaches also remembered Ray’s unforgettable sense of humor. One cherished story recalled a tense game in which the Warriors held a two-point lead with only seconds remaining as Ray stepped to the free-throw line. During a timeout, after listening to the coach outline plans for every possible outcome, Ray jokingly told his teammates, “Hey guys, there’s a good chance I’m going to miss these free throws, so let’s be ready to play some defense.”
His lighthearted comment eased the tension, and after making one of two free throws, the Warriors secured a three-point victory. It was a moment that perfectly reflected Ray’s humility, wit, and ability to keep those around him smiling even under pressure.
Lewis-Clark State Athletics also honored Ray’s memory, recognizing him as a great teammate, loyal friend, and proud Warrior. The university noted the longstanding connection between the Stout family and LC State athletics while extending heartfelt condolences to his loved ones.
Away from basketball, Ray’s greatest joy was his family. Friends and former teammates remember him as a devoted husband, loving father, caring son, and loyal friend who treasured every moment spent with those he loved. His family remained at the center of his life, and those closest to him speak of the unwavering love, encouragement, and support he gave to his wife, children, and extended family.
